Why and How Singing in the Rain Can be Good for you

Our long time supporter, Emmanuella Grace moved to Australia in the summer of 2012. We cannot blame her. She gets a lot more sun, more beaches and lot more wine in her new home country

Emmanuella is sharing with us a few insights on her passion and vocation, singing and brings it back to London by explaining why the capital's icitizens should embrace the rain and sing in the rain too. It will make you happy and help you live longer too!

Years of tall poppy syndrome, schoolyard put downs and reality TV shows would have us believe that singing is reserved exclusively for the talented, trained or delusional.

The fact is, if you can speak, you can sing.

The physical and psychological benefits of singing are extensive. And given that nothing feels better than cutting loose at karaoke…!

The Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health in the UK published a study that explored the health benefits of singing (based on a review of a number of studies). This included solo and group singing at amateur and professional levels; as well as classical and popular methods.

The perceived benefits of singing across all studies were:

Physical and emotional relaxation and release of tension
Stress reduction
Enhanced cognitive capacities (attention, concentration, memory, learning)
A sense of happiness and positivity
Greater personal, emotional and physical wellbeing
Increased energy, sense of self-confidence and self- esteem
Therapeutic benefits to sufferers of psychological and social problems
Improved posture
An increased sense of purpose and motivation

And ultimately, singing is good for the soul.

If we started taking the stairs every day our bums would be perkier. Flexing your singing muscles works the same. Surely!

Start the New Year with a resolution that is free, easy and achievable. Make a time that is just for you - singing in the house, at work and at home could be it! And this will help you to find your voice. On every single level.

We have started in our 2 Water office as of today. What will be your song of choice for today?

Have a magical Friday and an even better weekend!
